Planning

One page before anyone shoots

The reason short-form campaigns produce twenty assets nobody can evaluate is that nobody wrote down what success would look like before the first one got made.

The brief
  • Objective: one sentence, measurable
  • Audience: who, specifically, not everyone
  • Success: the number that decides it

Three steps

How it will work

  1. Write the objective as a number

Awareness is not an objective. A number attached to a date is.

  2. Name what gets made

How many assets, in which formats, for which placements. Vagueness here becomes rework later.

  3. Agree the kill criteria

The point at which you stop. Campaigns without one run until the budget does.

What it is for

Why this one is worth having

  • Briefs prevent arguments, not bad work

Their real function is that everyone agreed in advance what the thing was for, which is what makes an honest post-mortem possible.

  • Specific audience or none

An audience described as everyone who might like it produces creative aimed at nobody. Narrow it until it feels uncomfortably small.

  • It also works as an AI prompt

A brief with a real objective and a real audience is a far better generation input than a topic, which is a useful side effect.

FAQ

Campaign brief generator, asked and answered

Is a brief overkill for organic posting?

For a single post, yes. For anything with a budget, a deadline or more than one person involved, it is the cheapest document you will write.

How long should a brief be?

One page. A brief nobody reads is worse than none, because it creates the impression of alignment without any.

What goes wrong most often?

An unmeasurable objective. Everything downstream inherits the vagueness, and the campaign cannot be judged when it ends.
