Test one thing at a time

Most creative testing is not testing. Making four different videos and keeping the one that did best tells you which of four videos won, and nothing at all about why.

What you want to learn

does opening on the price beat opening on the problem

The test
  • Variable: first 3 seconds only
  • Variants: 6, everything else identical
  • Stop at: 1,000 views each

Three steps

How it will work

  1. Name one variable

The hook, or the CTA, or the format. Not the video. A test of everything is a test of nothing.

  2. Hold the rest identical

Same script, same presenter, same length. Any second difference makes the result unattributable.

  3. Set the stop in advance

Deciding when to stop after you have seen the numbers is how noise gets promoted to insight.

What it is for

Why this one is worth having

  • Volume is the prerequisite

You cannot test with three assets. Testing needs enough variants that most of them lose, which is the whole reason generation changed this discipline.

  • Losers are the output

A test where everything performed similarly is a real result: that variable does not matter, so stop spending attention on it.

  • One learning per test

Tests that answer three questions answer none of them cleanly. Run them in sequence and each one is worth something.

What you can already do

Generating six variants that differ in exactly one way is the part that used to be impossible. Rush deals a deck from one prompt and nothing renders until you keep one.

FAQ

Creative testing planner, asked and answered

How many variants do I need?

Six is a workable floor for a hook test. Below that, normal variance in short-form distribution swamps whatever you were trying to measure.

Can I test organically or does it need ad spend?

Organic works but is noisier, because distribution varies far more per post. Paid gives cleaner reads at the cost of money.

How long before a result is real?

Give a hook at least two weeks and several posts. One post is noise, and five posts in a consistent shape is a signal.
