Writing

Written for the ear

Text that reads well silently reads badly aloud. Subordinate clauses, parentheses and long noun phrases all survive on a page and all collapse the moment someone has to say them at speaking pace.

The idea

why cheap olive oil is fine for cooking and bad for salad

Speakable
  • Cheap olive oil is fine. For cooking.
  • Heat destroys the part you paid for.
  • So save the good stuff for cold.

Three steps

How it will work

  1. Say the point first

Voiceover has no headline. The first sentence is the only guaranteed one, so it carries the claim.

  2. Break every long sentence

If it needs a breath in the middle, it is two sentences and should be written as two.

  3. Read it out loud

The only reliable test. Anything you stumble on is something a listener will lose.

What it is for

Why this one is worth having

  • Sentence length is the whole craft

Spoken comprehension falls off a cliff past about fifteen words. Written comprehension does not, which is why page copy fails as voiceover.

  • No sentence that needs punctuation to parse

A listener cannot see a semicolon. Anything whose meaning depends on the punctuation has to be restructured.

  • Numbers get rounded

Forty-two point seven percent is unhearable. Nearly half is the same claim and it survives being said.

FAQ

Voiceover script generator, asked and answered

How many words fit in thirty seconds?

About seventy-five at a natural short-form pace, which is faster than broadcast. Writing to a word count rather than a time is how scripts end up rushed.

Should the script include the hook?

It should be the hook. A voiceover script whose first line is a preamble has already spent the only seconds it was guaranteed.

Does this work for faceless content?

It is mostly what faceless content is. The script is doing all the work the presenter would otherwise do.
