Explanation
The practical situation is that the labelling decision has largely been taken out of the poster's hands. TikTok has read C2PA Content Credentials since January 2025 and labels automatically when it finds them, and Meta has required disclosure across Instagram and Facebook since May 2026 while running its own classifiers alongside provenance signals.
What consistently gets actioned is undisclosed material rather than AI material. Both platforms permit generated content explicitly, which makes the rule easy to follow: the label should never be a surprise to you.
The common mistake
Assuming AI-assisted writing needs disclosing. Scripts, captions and hashtag help sit outside these rules, which are aimed at synthetic people, voices and scenes.
